WE’VE GOT A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO SAVING YOUR EYES
What gaming does to your eyes & why eye health is important
If you’ve ever suffered from extended headaches and/or sore, irritated eyes after a night of gaming with your pals, then read on to learn how you can prevent suffering from these in the future.
For those of us who spend hours a day staring at screens at work or playing video games at home, the most important thing to look after is our eyes. With gaming becoming more than just a hobby, some of us even make careers out of streaming, looking after our vision has become more important than ever.
Can playing video games affect your vision?
It’s a digital world out there and screens are everywhere we look. It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing on a monitor, tv, or your phone, your eyes are working hard, constantly trying to focus on each screen and that can lead to eye strain.
This even has its own name; computer vision syndrome for “when you develop a short-term effect when looking at something for a long period of time, such as a digital screen.” Developing headaches is also common.
If you’ve ever played consistently for many hours, without breaks, or concentrated on a screen for an entire session, then chances are you’ve experienced this, along with irritated and sore eyes.
The main factors that cause these issues with our eyes are the glare from the screen, having poor lighting (looking at you Twitch streamers), and not making a conscious effort to blink. If you wear contacts or glasses and game without wearing them, then the eye strain will be even worse. While this is temporary, it’s an easily avoidable situation, for which your eyes will thank you.
How to look after your eyes while playing video games
Firstly, if you have any concerns at all about your eye health consult your local optician. You could find that you need to wear glasses or contacts, or there may be an underlying condition you aren’t aware of.
If you’re a diehard gamer though, the main thing you can do is simply look away from the screen. Taking regular breaks, and even days off from gaming, will help ensure your eyes don’t become overworked and cause you pain. You can look at objects in the distance and take some time to enjoy the outdoors, both of these will keep your eyes healthy for longer and keep you at your gaming best.
